“Why isn’t there a piece of furniture that is a learning tower, high chair and play furniture in one?”

... I asked myself when our children started to explore their surroundings. For example, when cooking. Our daughter was still too small to sit next to me on the worktop. And if she had to watch from the floor, she was unhappy.

I wanted a hands-on chair that would support us in our family life in a variety of creative ways. A learning tower that was flexible enough to also be used for playing. A high chair that the children would feel completely comfortable in. A piece of furniture that would give us all years of pleasure. And that would meet our standards for quality, natural materials and good design. A real favorite.

Since we couldn't find such a chair, we built it ourselves with the help of a carpenter friend and named it "Wren."

Who are you?

My name is Ursula. Inspired by life with my children, I founded the label ZAUNKÖNIG in 2018. At ZAUNKÖNIG we design high-quality, handcrafted furniture and accessories for children that are so versatile that they will accompany us throughout our lives.

Since when have you been a designer?

I feel like I've been interested in the design and beauty of the things that surround us my whole life. However, my path to becoming a designer wasn't quite so straightforward. It took me through communication, the design of brand worlds and architecture.

What motivated you to become a designer?

When I became a mother, I noticed how few products there are that are beautifully designed, multifunctional and timeless - and therefore sustainable. Products that connect the worlds of parents and children in a completely natural way and are so durable that they might even make the leap to the next generation. Things that support everyday life, are well thought out, but are also so aesthetic that they enrich our "grown-up" world.
