GRANDPA ERWIN
OPA ERWIN stands for sustainable and genuine furniture, 100% Made in Germany.
The label founder Joachim Bohner grew up in a family of carpenters in the Swabian Alb. After training, studying and several years in the metal industry, he found his calling in the passion project named after his grandfather.
From tree to table
We fell the oak wood for our products ourselves in the local forests of the Swabian Alb. We only harvest individual, selected oak trees, which means that the forest's ecosystem as a whole remains in balance. According to a centuries-old tradition, we base the felling on the moon. This makes the furniture wood particularly durable and resilient.
In cooperation with small craft businesses from the region, our high-quality furniture is carefully handcrafted from this special wood.
Each of these pieces of furniture knows its roots: the location coordinates of the tree from which it is made are immortalized on the respective product.
design
Our long-lasting and timeless design is as tangible as the concept: everything reduced to the essentials, clear lines and balanced proportions. Of course, our natural oak wood is also visually in the foreground. In combination with the straight metal elements, a solid, harmonious unit is created.
Sustainable and genuine
The wood for our furniture comes 100% from sustainable German forestry. It is free of chemicals that are harmful to health and the environment, as we work without glue and treat the wooden surfaces exclusively with natural oils and resins. Thanks to regional wood harvesting and cooperation with local craft businesses, we keep transport routes short and thus protect the environment.
3 questions for the designer
How did you feel when you held your first finished product in your hands?
Great! Concepts, drafts and virtual 3D models give you a pretty good idea of what the finished product will look like. But actually having it in front of you is the absolute highlight. There is no substitute for the feel of wood, especially when it comes to such a wonderful material.
City of Design – Describe your favorite design city.
Oslo. I am fascinated by the city's mix of tradition and modernity. There is no hectic pace and you can feel that the people have one thing above all else: time.
What is your favorite material and why?
Wood.
On the one hand, it was literally in my blood because I grew up in a family of carpenters.
On the other hand, as a climate-neutral material, it can be used in a variety of ways for sustainable solutions, not only in the furniture sector.
